From Crochet Books to Guinness World Records: The Journey of Nirmala Gopinathan

Sometimes, a hobby begins simply because we have nothing else to do.

That was the case for Ms. Nirmala Gopinathan. What started as something to fill her free time in the 1970s slowly became a daily part of her life and eventually took her all the way to the Guinness World Records.

Now in her 70s, Ms. Nirmala's crochet journey is a lovely reminder that it's never too late to discover something you enjoy, keep learning, and turn your free time into something meaningful.

Meet the Maker – Nirmala Gopinathan

Ms. Nirmala started crocheting around 1975–76, at a time when learning a new craft wasn't as easy as it is today.

There were no YouTube tutorials, Instagram reels or online crochet classes to turn to.

So, she did what many craft enthusiasts did back then. She bought books and taught herself.

She learned different stitches and techniques from crochet books and gradually developed her own skills. And she never really stopped.

How Pondicherry Became Part of Her Crochet Journey

After getting married, Ms. Nirmala moved to Pondicherry, and the city ended up playing an important role in her creative journey.

Pondicherry has a long association with handmade crafts and traditional handiwork; and being surrounded by people involved in different crafts gave Ms. Nirmala an opportunity to meet others who could help her learn and improve.

She found contacts through the local craft community and continued learning from books while picking up tips and techniques from people around her.

It was a very different way of learning compared to today.

No quick search for a tutorial.

No "pause and replay."

Just a book, a crochet hook, some yarn and plenty of patience.

From Free Time to a Daily Passion

What I find particularly lovely about Ms. Nirmala's story is how naturally crochet became part of her everyday life.

She didn't start with the goal of becoming a record holder.

She started because she wanted make her freetime productive.

But the more she crocheted, the more she enjoyed it. Eventually, it became something she did regularly. A creative activity that gave her a sense of happiness and accomplishment.

Sometimes, we pick up a hobby simply because we have some free time. We don't know where it will take us. We just enjoy doing it.

And sometimes, that is exactly how something meaningful begins.

When Crochet Became a Guinness World Record

Ms. Nirmala's crochet journey eventually led her to Mother India Crochet Queens (MICQ), a community of crochet artists who came together to create large-scale crochet projects.

MICQ has achieved several Guinness World Records, including the World's Longest Crocheted Scarf, measuring an incredible 14.089 kilometres. The record was achieved in Chennai in 2017.

The group also went on to set the record for the Largest Display of Crochet Sculptures.

For Ms. Nirmala, being part of these record-breaking projects meant taking something she had been doing for years and becoming part of something much bigger.

Imagine crocheting alongside hundreds or even thousands of other women, with every individual piece contributing to a world record. That makes the achievement even more special.

Her Family Was Always Behind Her

Behind many handmade artists is a support system that doesn't always get enough attention.

For Ms. Nirmala, her family has been one of her biggest sources of encouragement.

They supported her crochet journey and even made sure she had yarn to work with. Whenever family members travelled, they would look out for yarn and bring it back for her.  It's a small gesture, but it says a lot.

Having people around you who understand how much your craft means to you can make all the difference.

And in Ms. Nirmala's case, that support continued through the years and even became part of her Guinness journey.

Decades of Skill in Every Stitch

Ms. Nirmala’s work stands out for its exceptional quality, neat finishing, and attention to detail. Her stitches are consistently even, and each piece reflects the patience and experience she has built over decades of crocheting.

What I also appreciate is her approach to materials. She chooses good-quality yarns that are affordable and practical, proving that beautiful crochet doesn't always have to come with an expensive price tag. For her, the right yarn, careful stitching, and thoughtful finishing are what make a handmade piece special.

From what I have observed, there is a clear sense of skill and care in everything she creates.

How I Met Nirmala aunty and Got to Know Her Better

I first met Nirmala aunty many years ago, when she was living in Kerala. At the time, I had just started crocheting as a hobby, so meeting someone with so much experience in yarn crafts was a wonderful discovery.

She generously showed me her crochet work, shared details about the yarns and other materials she used, and even told me where she sourced them. I remember being fascinated by how much she knew and how willingly she shared what she had learned over the years.

What has always stood out to me is her enthusiasm for learning and trying new things. Her energy and excitement when she talks about crafts can easily make you forget her age. Although she is 70, her curiosity and youthful spirit make her seem decades younger.

Perhaps that is one of the quiet joys of handmade crafts. They keep you engaged and excited to create something new.

Even with a busy home life and plenty of responsibilities, Nirmala aunty always finds time for her crafts.

After years of dedication to crochet, Nirmala aunty has now turned her attention to the delicate and intricate art of tatting. Her tatting work, in particular, has always fascinated me. I have tried both needle and shuttle tatting myself, but I didn't stick with it for very long. The tight threads and constant tension quickly made my fingers ache! Watching Nirmala aunty's work with such patience and ease makes me appreciate the skill behind every piece even more.

Final Thoughts

What stands out most about the journey of Nirmala Gopinathan is that she has never stopped learning. Today, Ms. Nirmala is in Bangalore, continuing to create beautiful pieces and work her magic with the skill and experience she has built. 

The Guinness certificate may be the official recognition of her achievement, but the real achievement is the life she has built around something that brings her joy. Her story shows us that a hobby doesn't have to begin with a grand ambition. Sometimes, all it takes is a little free time, a willingness to learn, and the desire to create something with your own hands.
